In The Star Tarot Card, we see a woman kneels beside a pool and in her hands are two jugs of water, which she pours into the pool and on the land. From our angle of vision, it appears as if one of her feet is resting on the water’s surface. She is naked beneath the stars and focused on her task. In The Star we have the card that falls under the influence of Aquarius, but here the water carrier is sharing her bounty. All around her is an idyllic landscape for this is a card of aspiration, service to humanity and idealism. The Star Tarot Card may remind us of Temperance, but here the energy has been balanced sufficiently for it to be of good to others. However, for all its idealism, The Star cautions us to remain balanced and to not see the world through rose-tinted glasses. The world is the way it is and to pretend otherwise is at best folly and at worse dangerous. And this is also true of people around us. The Star, while indicating a person of high values and morality, must temper their desire to ‘do good’ with the wisdom to know precisely what that means in a given situation. There is also a simplicity to this Star towercard and we may be being guided to streamline our lives, to remove those influences and situations that could threaten our equilibrium. This may seem counter-intuitive since our desire may genuinely be to help others. The benefit of experience (which can often mean past mistakes!) is that we learn to be more discerning in our dealings with people. We can only help others when we are able to stand back from their situation and respond rather than reacting. The Star may also appear in a reading when someone is about to receive help from unexpected sources. In such circumstances, we must be not only ready to receive, but also gracious about what exactly is on offer. Perhaps the foot resting on the water is a reminder that appearances can sometimes be deceptive. Not because people are always out to cheat us, but because sometimes we persist with a certain perspective long after it has outlived its usefulness. We need to be willing to see things as they truly are. The stars in the card remind us that we are always connected with higher forces if we are prepared to cultivate the necessary stillness to be able to tap into universal guidance, which can come to us in a multiplicity of ways.
